WASHINGTON – Senator John McCain ’s recent harsh critique of the Republican-led response to Hurricane Katrina no doubt reminded some of his newfound allies in Congress that his independent image was often honed at his party’s expense.

Mr. McCain, the go-his-own-way Arizona lawmaker, has had an up-and-down relationship with Republican colleagues for years, particularly those in the House. He feuded openly with the former Republican leaders, whom he often treated with disdain and suspicion — a sentiment they often returned.

That checkered past has stirred mixed emotions among House Republicans, who embrace the candidate McCain as a potential savior whose maverick reputation could rescue them in an off-year for the party brand.

the 15-year-old star of Disney’s Hannah Montana juggernaut, is the latest tween sensation to threaten her innocent reputation — and give her parent company a headache — after posing for racy photos that appeared online this weekend.

But the photos — including one of Cyrus topless, clutching a blanket over her chest — weren’t taken by an amateur with an ax to grind. Instead, they were part of an Annie Leibovitz spread that will run in an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair. Cyrus apologized to her fans and told People magazine that she “never intended for any of this to happen.”

Apparent tornadoes in Virginia injure more than 200

By DENA POTTER, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago

RICHMOND, Va. – Apparent tornadoes swept through central and southeastern Virginia on Monday afternoon, damaging multiple homes and buildings and injuring more than 200 people, authorities said. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine declared a state of emergency for the damaged areas of southeastern Virginia.

Two apparent tornadoes struck the city of Suffolk, city spokeswoman Dana Woodson said. Bob Spieldenner from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management said at least 200 people were injured there.

At least 18 more people were injured when the storm hit Colonial Heights, Spieldenner said. Three of those were taken to hospitals. Woodson initially said one person died in Suffolk but later said the death was not connected to the storm.

Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk was damaged, but remained operational, Spieldenner said. Another hospital in the city also was treating the injured, Woodson said.

Sentara spokesman Dale Gauding said about 60 people were being treated, and he expected most to be released.

“We have lots of cuts and bruises,” plus leg and arm injuries, he said. Some of the hospital’s windows were cracked, apparently by flying debris.

“Multiple buildings have been destroyed, homes have been destroyed,” Woodson said. She said the areas around the hospital and in the community of Driver were hardest hit.

The storm in Colonial Heights overturned cars and blew out vehicle windows in the Southpark Mall area. Some buildings also were damaged.

Southside Regional Medical Center treated one storm victim with minor injuries and was poised to receive more, hospital spokeswoman Terry Tysinger said. John Randolph Hospital in Hopewell was put on “high alert.”

Property damage also was reported in Brunswick County, one of several localities where the National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning. Sgt. Michelle Cotten of the Virginia State Police said an apparent twister destroyed two homes. Trees and power lines were down, and some flooding was reported.

The National Weather Service had not confirmed any of the tornado reports, system forecaster Rick Curry of the Wakefield office said. However, he said the service was reasonably certain that a tornado hit Colonial Heights based on televised images and an eyewitness account from a weather service employee.

About 18,000 Virginia Dominion Power customers were without service.

The storm also damaged some homes in North Carolina, but the damage was not widespread or severe.

WASHINGTON – Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said Monday that either Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama must drop out of the Democratic presidential race after the June primaries in order to unify the party by the convention and win the election in November.

But Dean didn’t say which candidate should drop out, only that it should happen after primary voters have been to the polls.

“We want the voters to have their say. That’s over on June 3,” Dean said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Dean also said that while the party rules say Democratic superdelegates can wait until the party’s August 25 convention to make up their minds, that would be too late to unify the party and defeat the presumptive Republican nominee, John McCain.

“We really can’t have a divided convention. If we do it’s going to be very hard to heal the party afterwards,” Dean said. “So we’ll know who the nominee is and that’ll give us an extra 2 1/2 months to get our party together, heal the wounds of having a very closely divided race and take on Senator McCain.”

Dean said he won’t have to tell either Clinton or Obama when it’s time to leave the race.

“Either of these candidates, if it’s time for them to go, they’ll know it and they will go,” Dean said. “They don’t need any pushing from me. You know when to get in and you know when to get out. That’s just part of the deal.”

“This is not about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama,” Dean added. “This is about our country. It’s about a better course for our country. … We’ve got to move on and win the presidency.”

Obama has more delegates and popular votes than Clinton, but she is also fresh off a big-state win in Pennsylvania.

Dean said that “none of the so-called party elders I talked to” think the contest should go until the convention. “I agree with that,” Dean said.

“We’ve got nine more primaries … Five hundred of the 800 unpledged delegates have already said who they are for. The remaining 300 will do that by the end of June and we’ll know who our nominee is and that’s what we need to do,” Dean said on NBC’s “Today” show.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Indulging in chocolate during pregnancy could help ward off a serious complication known as preeclampsia, new research suggests.

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is rich in a chemical called theobromine, which stimulates the heart, relaxes smooth muscle and dilates blood vessels, and has been used to treat chest pain, high blood pressure, and hardening of the arteries, Dr. Elizabeth W. Triche of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and colleagues write.

Preeclampsia, in which blood pressure spikes during pregnancy while excess protein is released into the urine, has many features in common with heart disease, the researchers add.

To investigate whether chocolate’s possible cardiovascular benefits also might help prevent preeclampsia, the researchers looked at 2,291 women who delivered a single infant, and asked them about how much chocolate they consumed in their first and third trimesters. The researchers also tested levels of theobromine in infants’ umbilical cord blood.

Women who consumed the most chocolate and those whose infants had the highest concentration of theobromine in their cord blood were the least likely to develop preeclampsia. Women in the highest quarter for cord blood theobromine were 69 percent less likely to develop the complication than those in the lowest quarter.

Women who ate five or more servings of chocolate each week in their third trimester of pregnancy were 40 percent less likely to develop preeclampsia than those who ate chocolate less than once a week.

A similar, but weaker, relationship between chocolate consumption and preeclampsia risk was seen in the first trimester, with women eating five or more servings of chocolate each week at 19 percent lower risk than those who ate chocolate less than once a week.

Theobromine could improve circulation within the placenta while blocking oxidative stress, or it could also be a stand-in for other beneficial chemicals found in chocolate, Triche and her team note in the May issue of Epidemiology.

“Our results raise the possibility that chocolate consumption by pregnant women may reduce the occurrence of preeclampsia,” they write. “Because of the importance of preeclampsia as a major complication of pregnancy, replication of these results in other large prospective studies with a detailed assessment of chocolate consumption is warranted

WASHINGTON – The government started depositing thousands of rebate checks in taxpayers’ bank accounts on Monday, earlier than originally scheduled, with the Bush administration hoping the payments will give a jump-start to a weak economy.

The Internal Revenue Service started making the deposits at 8:30 a.m. EDT Monday with the goal of completing 800,000 direct deposits each day over the first three days of this week. No deposits will be made Thursday while the IRS prepares a big batch of 5 million direct deposits scheduled on Friday.

The government’s paper checks will start going out on May 9, a week earlier than previously announced. The rebates, which are expected to reach 130 million households, range up to $600 for an individual and $1,200 for a couple. Families with children will get $300 per child.

The rebates were the centerpiece of the government’s $168 billion economic stimulus package enacted in February and are designed to bolster consumer spending and lift the economy out of the doldrums.

While many economists believe the country has fallen into a recession, President Bush last week disputed that contention, saying he believed it was a period of slower growth not an full-blown recession.

“It’s obvious our economy is in a slowdown. But fortunately we recognized the signs and took action,” Bush said Friday in announcing that the rebates were going out a few days earlier than expected.

The rebate checks are coming as the IRS wraps up sending out the normal refund checks to taxpayers based on their 2007 tax returns which taxpayers had to file by April 15.

Thirty-five percent of those responding to an Associated Press-AOL Money & Finance Poll earlier this month said that they planned to ruse their refund checks this year to pay utility, credit card and other bills. That was up from 27 percent who said they planned to use their tax refunds to pay bills a year ago.

The IRS said all checks for those who filed tax returns on time are scheduled to be deposited or mailed by July 11. The direct deposits and the paper checks are being processed by the last two digits of a taxpayers’ Social Security number.

For people receiving direct deposits, those with a Social Security number ending in 00 to 20 will have their economic stimulus payment deposited to their bank account by May 2.

Those with Social Security numbers ending in 21 to 75 will get their direct deposits by May 9 and those with Social Security numbers ending in 76 to 99 getting their deposits by May 16.

Useful Methods On How To Get Cheap And Discount Airfares

How would you fancy seeing an advertisement on the internet or television for a cheap airfare offer to travel to Frankfurt, Germany from Los Angeles, California with a mere $55? Sure, you will love to have that cheap ticket in your hands with no strings attached if you have to travel to Germany for any reason, isn’t it? Well, I would love to have three more for my wife and two children. I would also love to buy more tickets for friends and relations and refer many more to this wonderful giveaway.

One thing most air travelers have in common is this: they are always on the look-out for anything that carries the phrases “cheap airline tickets,” “cheap airfares,” “discount airfares” “lowest airfares here,” “dirt cheap airline tickets for sale” and so on and so forth. True, everyone loves free, cheap or discount stuff especially if it has to do with tickets for shows, movies or air travel.

Air travel has come of age and new methods of getting really cheap air tickets are constantly emerging. With the stiff competition in the global aviation sector, airlines are regularly devising very good means of passenger travel at rock-bottom airfares. A normal search for “cheap airline tickets” or “cheap discount airfares” made on Google will produce millions of results showing that you don’t have to leave your home or office to get the exact price you can afford to travel to your destination.

There are quite a number of ways to get those much sought after dirt cheap, very low and great discount air tickets; whether for local or international travel. Once online, you can browse through dozens of trusted websites that will fetch you cheap air tickets only, discount airfares only or dirt cheap airfares only; using the exact criteria you select to search. Here, you have the option to make your best pick for a cheap air ticket by comparing various offers from different airlines. Of course, this is allowed since you are out for the best deal on an airfare.

Alternatively, you may want to go directly to the airline’s website to find your offer for cheap airfares especially if you are a frequent flyer with a particular airline. This method however gives a limited choice for cheap air tickets compared to broader searches for so many of them that exist online. After you have successfully searched and grabbed an offer, then you can go ahead and make your seat reservation. Otherwise, the best bet is to look further for more discount offers for cheap air tickets because they do exist.

Still on the hunt for very cheap airfares, you can go after the smaller airlines with lesser passenger traffic for discount offers to the same places you wish to travel to. More often than not, these relatively unknown airlines give away their seats for airfares that can best be classified as dirt cheap. The tickets are affordable to those who wish to travel without excess comfort and with less fanfare. This category of travelers may be students, low-income earners, non-frequent travelers and other budget-conscious passengers.

An offline option to getting great discounts on air tickets if to go directly to travel agents to make a booking. They will use their experience to find those hidden or unknown discount tickets for you, at the same time giving you some good savings. They have almost all the airlines’ travel itineraries at their disposal and will give you dirt cheap fares at their pleasure. Just make sure that you are purchasing your cheap air ticket from an authorized travel agent to eliminate the risk of swindling. Apart from the fear of being duped, there are certain issues like refund of air fare which most airlines will only honor if purchased from their authorized travel agents. Although for their efforts, there is a nominal charge for the services of travel agents.
